Free Fun with Paper Models

When I was little I loved putting together models. Lately I have been researching the latest japanese trend of assembling paper models. Unlike Origami, paper models require lots of cutting and glue. But you can create some very large and complex sculptures. Some artists will make their own model layouts and provide different skins, or even allow you to create your own. I like to think of it as interactive, distributable artwork.
I found a great article on the process of designing your own models.
Here is a simple model of the millenium Falcon!
And here is a super complex, but very leet castle (50 mb)
There are loads of models already available online for your assembling pleasure!

My first foray into paper models was a six foot tall Saturn V rocket purchased for me at a local museum by my grandmother back in Fifth Grade, some 20 + years ago… Thank you for completely destroying my free time, and my printer cartridges, for the forseeable future (my girlfriend hates you!!!)… If this encroaches on my architecture studio time once school starts back up, you’ll probably get a nasty e-mail (not from me… I’ll probably be staring at page 23 of the instructions, kicking myself for not learning Japanese, as the “whoosh” sound of plummeting grades echoes unnoticed). I’ll be sure to send photos of the finished project… SWEEET!!!! I think I’m gonna jump in the car to pick up more X-Acto blades and glue…

Here’s a site that offers a translation of the instructions from japanese into english:

I’ve been using generic card stock from the scrapbooking section of Michael’s craft store. 2 bucks for fifty sheets of a mix of white, grey and tan paper.
